Upcoming Art & Wellness
Events & Workshops

Think of us as an "art gym." Just like you would attend a yoga or meditation class for your well-being, you can drop-into a creative workshop at Canopy Studios to Create, Discover, Connect and feel the healing power of the arts.

Our workshops welcome beginners and require no artistic ability or skill. We hope you give it a try and discover the healing power of the arts

“It is the practice of using imagery, storytelling, dance, music, drama, poetry, horticulture, dreamwork, and visual arts together, in an integrated way, to foster human growth, development and healing.”

mindfulness, music, and art

Sunday October 13, 2024
2:00 - 3:30pm
FREE

Join us for a unique experience designed to introduce you to the healing power of art and music. In this 75-minute session, we’ll listen to a blend of warm and instrumental music that encourages us to reflect on personal experiences that need healing. If inspiration strikes, you can express your feelings through art—whether it’s painting, drawing, or even working with clay. We’ll provide some art materials, but feel free to bring other supplies that inspire you.

Disclaimer:
This workshop is meant to be a creative and enriching experience. It is not led by a licensed therapist and should not replace professional mental health support. This session is for ages 18 and older

Meet your Facilitator

A passionate music enthusiast, Chad channels his love for creative expression into his full-time work as a recovery coach and as an employee at The National Music Centre at Studio Bell. His project, Hear.Feel.Heal., brings together mental health, art, music, mindfulness, and human connection.

Chad is eager to share his personal journey with participants and explain how he found solace in art and music and how they helped him connect with his true self and process trauma.

When he is not working, facilitating workshops, or creating art, Chad enjoys baseball, cooking, cycling, golf, and painting.

MEET YOUR GUIDE

Nicole Gruszecki is a visual artist from Calgary, Alberta who taps into her horror punk DIY roots for inspiration. Currently, she creates zines (mini self-published magazines), comics, drawings and paintings to bring joy to the people that engage with her work. Nicole’s zines are often mini love letters to the things in life she engages with most. Such as, horror movies, music, animals and videogames. Her art often has a nostalgic feel to it, pulling imagery from patterns, 80s VHS tapes, classic science fiction and traditional comic book aesthetics. She works in a variety of mediums including paint, ink, markers, collage and digital art.

Drawing Landscapes

In this workshop, participants will learn some tips and tricks for drawing the outside world from observation.

Drawing landscapes is a meditative way to spend time outside and connect yourself to your surroundings. This workshop is for any skill level, and is a great way to get into drawing.

About your Creative Guide:

Gillian Coulton’s work is an ever-evolving conversation with the rural landscape and contemporary painting. Coulton is an MFA graduate from the University of Calgary originally from rural Alberta. Coulton received her Visual Studies certificate from Red Deer College, her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Calgary and was awarded the Faculty of Arts Gold Medal. Her work is informed by her open experience growing up in a rural area, and grappling with the connections between how we understand the landscape, memory, and relationships between people. In Coulton’s work, vignettes and material remnants of rural spaces are stylized to reflect an impression of memory and experience, and to encourage the audience to connect to the emotional core and personal stories in those memories. Aesthetic choices in the work reflect the necessary material efficiency of rural spaces and encourage a connection that is both tactile and intangible.

It's a powerful tool you can use in moments of stress, anxiety, and indecision. At Canopy, we believe that all types of art including creative writing, dance, drama, music and visual art are healing and one's own creativity can be used as a powerful tool for wellness.

Some people many not think of themselves as an artist or creative if it has not been nurtured in their past but we are trying to change that belief and show people that EVERYONE is creative and no artistic ability or previous art experience is necessary to be a part of our Creative Canopy Community and attend our expressive workshops or events.
